What's New: RIAA Wins Music Sharing Suit

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has won the first of some 20,000 copyright infringement suits it has filed against people sharing music online. The U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota found single mom Jammie Thomas guilty of sharing 24 songs on the Kazaa file sharing network, and fined her $220,000. The fine could have been as much as $3.6 million.

This verdict is good news for the RIAA, which has been aggressive in pursuing people who distribute song recordings for free on the Internet, as well as those who run the file sharing networks that allow (and sometimes encourage) this activity.
