What's New: Office 2003 SP3 Removes Older File Formats
Microsoft's Service Pack 3 update to Office 2003 quietly removes compatibility with several older file formats. Affected formats include Word 6.0 for Windows (and older), along with older Lotus 1-2-3, Quattro, and Corel Draw files. Microsoft decided to block users from opening these older file formats for security reasons. While this change will not affect most users, those with older files or archives of older files would need to implement a registry setting change to be able to open affected files, in order to save them in a newer file format.
