What's New: A Password And A Smile
A UK study of 300 office workers and IT professionals showed 64% will give out their password to a total stranger. The social engineering test was conducted at London stations and an IT trade show by offering passersby a free bar of chocolate and some friendly conversation. The testers asked if they knew what the most common password was ("password") and asking people what their password was. Reportedly, 40% of users and 22% of commuters divulged their password. For those that declined, researchers asked if it was based on the name of a child, pet, or sports team, and began guessing possible passwords. At this stage a further 42% of IT professionals and 22% of commuters revealed their password.
