What's New: Emergency Windows Patch Released Today
Microsoft will release a rare "out of cycle" security update for Windows at noon CDT today. Typcially such updates are released only when a serious security threat exists, and/or an active exploit for the threat already exists on the Internet. Normal updates are released to Windows Update on the second Tuesday of each month. In this case, however, Microsoft appears to have detected the security threat internally since it is not known to the security community.
Microsoft does say the flaw is rated "critical" for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, but less of an issue for Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
