What's New: Cut Cable Disrupts Internet
Telecom companies suspect that anchors from ships trying to avoid a storm near Egypt damaged two underwater cables in the Mediterranean Sea Wednesday that account for 75 percent of the network capacity between Europe and the Middle East. The cable cuts affected data and some voice communications out of United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India and all of the Gulf states. Operators can route traffic through Asia but the traffic volume and latency is causing very slow connections. The cables should be repaired in one to two weeks.
