What's New: 60 Billion Spammed Daily
Security researchers say the Srizbi botnet can send up to 60 billion spam messages per day, or 50% of the world's spam. Botnets use "zombie" computers - in this case 300,000 - that have been compromised and are being used without their owners' knowledge. Symantec says Srizbi installs as a "rootkit" or very-low-level program that has complete system access, and can even remove competing rootkits and malware.
Srizbi is not the largest botnet...researchers estimated the Storm botnet had infected somewhere between 500,000 and several million PCs before growing media attention made it a target of security vendors worldwide.
