What's New: 6 Gbit SATA Interface Demostrated
Today, AMD and Seagate were to demonstrate a 6 Gbit per second SATA interface. Double the current speed, the new SATA standard is expected to be used for high speed hard drives and flash drives. Neither AMD nor Seagate have announced products, but Seagate expects the data transfer rate of hard drives and flash drives to max out the current SATA standard by 2011. At that time the data transfer of the outer areas of a hard drive (the fastest rotating) will reach 250 MB/s, exceeding the current 3 Gbit/s transfer rate.
