What's New: Windows Vista: 'Longhorn' Due Out In 2006
Microsoft announced Friday that the official name for the next version of Windows, codenamed "Longhorn," will be Windows Vista. The marketing tag line, "bringing clarity to your world," will debut with the new operating system's release in 2006. The first beta, or pre-release test version, of the software will be available to developers in early August.
While this will be the first major upgrade to the Windows XP family since 2001, it is tough to get too excited about Vista as Microsoft continues to remove features, such as its radically new file system, to stay on schedule. Fortunately for businesses, Microsoft has said they intend to release updates to Windows XP so that it can run programs designed for the new programming interface in Windows Vista.
