What's New: Windows Live to be Free, Ad-Supported
A new vision for applications was behind last week's management shakeup at Microsoft, when a new head was appointed to oversee the Windows operating system along with Windows Live. Initially planned as a subscription service, Microsoft now plans to offer many Windows Live services for free, using advertising revenue to offset development costs. Most Windows Live apps will run in a browser with the user interface on a remote device and the application logic on the web server.
Microsoft expects online ad revenue to total $45 billion by 2008.
