Why doesn't Outlook Express notify me when I receive new e-mail?

Actually, Outlook Express does alert users to new e-mail; unfortunately one of the default settings makes this feature useless!

In Outlook Express 5, open the Tools>Options dialog using the menus. On the Read tab, the first option is "Mark message read after displaying for 5 second(s)." Since messages are automatically displayed in the preview pane, a message is only "new" for 5 seconds! You can also turn off the Preview pane by using the View/Layout menu option. Similar settings are also present in previous versions of Outlook Express.
