One of the most basic tasks you will need to perform as a Virtual Private Server administrator is uploading and downloading files to and from your Virtual Private Server. There are three main ways to transfer files to and from your server.

iManager

A user interface is available that allows you to transfer files to and from a Virtual Private Server in an easy-to-use and comfortable environment. The iManager File Manager allows you to use your own web browser to upload and download files to and from your Virtual Private Server. To connect to iManager simply browse to www.yourdomain.com/imanager/ and log in.

FTP

You can upload and download files using any number of FTP programs, such as BulletProof FTP or WS_FTP. Many free and shareware FTP programs are available. Most HTML authoring programs (such as Macromedia Dreamweaver) use an internal FTP program to transfer files as well. To use FTP:

  1. Start your FTP client and connect to your Virtual Private Server using your login ID and password that you received in Your Virtual Private Server Configuration E-Mail when your Virtual Private Server was first configured. Do not use anonymous as the login ID, as you will not have access to the directories and files you need.
  2. After you log in, you will be placed in your Virtual Private Server home directory (/usr/home/LOGIN_ID). This is the same directory you find yourself in when you connect to your Virtual Private Server via Telnet or SSH.
  3. Your FTP client should allow you to select the file transfer mode, either ASCII or BINARY. Use ASCII mode to transfer text files and BINARY mode to transfer binary files. Most FTP clients have an Automatic transfer mode option that can be set. When this option is selected the FTP client will automatically determine which file transfer mode to use when you upload or download files. Uploading a binary file in ASCII mode will corrupt the file rendering it unusable.

Windows File Sharing

Our VPS servers support Samba, a server program that will allow you to map a network drive letter to your server. Since the configuration for this is slightly more involved than the above methods, please contact ITS Technical Support for assistance.
