What's New: New LCD Changes Modes In Sunlight, Can Cut Power Usage 75%
LG Display announced a 14.1 inch LCD panel that can be changed from reflective to transmissive mode depending on the ambient lighting. This would be the first LCD panel that can quickly switch from reflective mode in an environment with bright ambient light to transmissive mode for surroundings with dim light such as indoors or nighttime. LG says the new display not only provides a 9:1 contrast ratio in direct sunlight (vs. most displays' 2:1 or 3:1 contrast) but it can also cut power usage by up to 75% over a traditional display if the user switches the screen to transmissive mode.
