What's New: Beware Fake Flash Players, Adobe Warns
Adobe is advising users to be on the lookout for links on social networking sites that purport to download Flash Player, but in reality download malware. In particular, security vendor Kaspersky Lab found yesterday a Twitter profile that linked to a video that, if clicked, pretended to download Flash Player but in reality installed ten varieties of malware that attempt to steal banking information. Compounding user confusion, Adobe has updated Flash Player several times this year to resolve security issues.
Users should only download Flash Player from an Adobe web site. Users can verify that a downloaded Flash Player installer is legitimate by right-clicking, selecting Properties, then clicking the Digital Signatures tab. The publisher should be listed as "Adobe Systems, Incorporated." The current version of Flash Player as of this writing is 9.0.124.0.
